Moving Forward with the Eyak Lake Weir Replacement Project
The Copper River Watershed Project is pleased to announce an important milestone for the long-awaited replacement of the Eyak Lake Weir (outlet structure). Constructed after the 1964 earthquake to maintain lake levels and critical spawning habitat, the existing weir has long been recognized as undersized and deteriorating, creating challenges for both fish passage and lake level management. After years of planning and coordination, Granite Construction has been selected as the contractor to complete this critical project.
While the project encountered some substantial delays tied to federal funding processes, CRWP and partners are pleased to report that the construction timeline remains on track with our original schedule. Earlier this year, we purchased and secured the steel sheet pile needed for the new structure, ensuring key materials are in place before work begins. Final permitting and scheduling are underway, with construction expected to start in January 2026. Substantial completion is anticipated by April 2026, with final completion in May 2026.
Funding and support for this project come through strong collaboration with the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council (EVOSTC) and The Eyak Corporation, with federal highway funds administered through a grant to The Eyak Corporation.

While only an approximation and not a final “after” photo, it offers a glimpse of the improvements to come. We can’t wait to share the real completed images with you in 2026.
